There are some members who start out with a nice size stake and diversify from the beginning. If they've taken the time to educate themselves before making their choices, they will probably do pretty good.

But there are many who find $500 an impossible figure to even think about. I would guess that the largest group of over $500 investors didn't start with $500, though, they probably worked up to that amount.

So, achieving the $500 amount is not really anything in itself. There are those who manage several thousand dollars and those who start with maybe $5 or $10. The main thing is not really the amount, but rather that the amount is disposable or discretionary funds. In other words, it's play money. Money you'd otherwise spend on CDs, pizza and beer or tickets to the theatre.
